Moving House Check List
When you move house, you need to advise a number of people of your change of address. This checklist, while not exhaustive, includes some of the things you'll need to remember.
Post Office
It is advisable to have your mail redirected to your new address. The Post Office will arrange this for a relatively small charge.
Telephone
You will need to advise your phone carrier and internet provider the appropriate date for disconnection at your existing residence and request connection at your new address.
Electricity
Your electricity distribution authority requires dates for the final meter reading at your old address and the connection date for your new address.
Gas
If you have a gas hot water system or stove at your existing residence, the gas company will need to be advised for meter readings. Many homes are connected to Natural Gas so it is important to know whether the house you are moving to requires a gas connection.
Pay TV
If you have a pay TV account, you will need to notify your carrier of your move and there may be some costs involved in having the cable TV account transferred and set up in the new premises.
Newspaper / Magazines
Arrange cancellation of delivery to your present address and finalise your account. Contact the newsagent nearest your new address to arrange delivery.
Financial Institutions
Advise relevant Financial Institutions of your change of address (eg. Building Society, Finance Company, Bank and Credit Cards).
Insurance Policies
Your Insurance Company/ies should be advised of your change of address for life and car insurance policies. House owners insurance and Householders contents policies will need to be transferred or new insurance effected.
Employer
Don’t forget to let your employer know your new address and telephone number for their records.
Accountant / Solicitor
Advise your professional advisor of your change of address. This may be important for taxation, Wills etc.
Health Insurance
Advise your Health Insurance Fund of your change of address.
Driver's Licence
Have your Licence endorsed with your change of address at your local Department of Transport.
Car Registration
Advise the Department of Transport in writing of your new address, with details of your car registration.
Electoral Rolls
You will need to register on State and Commonwealth Electoral Rolls of your new address. Forms are available from your local Post Office or Police Station and should be completed by all persons 18 years and over.
Club / Union
You should advise your new address to any club or union to which you belong to.
Doctor / Dentist
Remember your Doctor and Dentist have your medical records so it is important to keep them advised of your current address.
Friends and Relatives
Last but not least. This could involve many telephone calls.
